Kootenay River
The Kootenay River is a destination fishing area. All the major streams in the Kootenay Valley empty into this river that is best fished in April and May, and in fall. Known for great bull trout fishing, you can also find rainbow and cutthroat on this river. A true wilderness area, this river can be challenging so it is always best to head out with an experienced local guide.
The Kootenay has a flowing current but mostly it's flat water and it makes for an easy paddle. Many kayakers put in at "Bummers-Flats" between Wasa and Fort Steele and paddle down the river. They take their boat out just after the bridge by Fort Steele.
